PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. It is a new and exciting treatment for hair loss besides many other uses in medicine. Blood has two components, 1)liquid (called plasma), 2) solid component comprised of red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets. Platelets contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which have a very important role in the healing.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is concentrated plasma full of platelets having approximately five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. So it has increased concentration of platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF) and other bioactive proteins. These factors, including VEGF and PDGF, have shown to induce follicular growth and result in the strengthening of miniaturized hairs making for a fuller, thicker and healthier head of hair. Thus being helpful in androgenic Alopecia.
PRP helps to regenerate hair growth, increase hair thickness, improve scalp health, revise scars, and expedite healing after hair transplant.Book an Appointment
PRP is used to stimulate the growth of follicles, thereby reversing the hair miniaturization seen in androgenetic alopecia.
It is also postulated that PRP can actually stimulate the stem cells (dermal papilla) of the newly transplanted hair follicles, so my be useful in hair transplant. At MedLinks, we have an extensive experience is the use of PRP for Androgenic alopecia, both in men and women. As monotherapy, the results are variable in clinical scenario when it comes to hair volumization. However, it makes a very good add-on to the routine medical therapy for hair loss and is also helpful in patients who are shedding a lot of hair.
The treatments are administered by a physician and take about 30- 45 minutes which can be done any time of the day. Once PRP is prepared, the liquid is injected into the scalp at the correct depth and angle. We offer local anaesthesia prior to the PRP injections which helps to reduce the pain. Treatment is divided into 2 phases,
The doctor should have the knowledge to know when PRP for hair loss is appropriate and the skill & precision to inject the exact quantity of PRP at just the right depth to achieve the desired result — a skill that cannot be overstated. The preparation of PRP is also very important. At MedLinks, we have standardized the preparation protocol and consistently achieve Platelets concentration in the range of 5-8 times.
It’s gaining significance for treating both male and female pattern baldness. Studies have revealed that when PRP was injected on scalp skin, hairs that had begun to thin out began to improve and gradually became thicker and longer
PRP injections don’t have any major side effects since the patient’s own blood is utilized.
Patients who have been heavily smoking for many years or drinking alcohol are not advised to take this at all. Drug addicts are also prohibited to undertake this medicine. Pregnant and lactating women should also avoid this treatment.
