It’s emerged as another effective method for treating many kinds of alopecia. It’s advised to patients who haven’t observed any benefits of using minoxidil or finasteride for treating different types of alopecia or hair loss conditions. Taken in form of shots (syringes), 4-5 cc quantity of PRP is enough to promote hair growth in patients.
How it Works
Since PRP has an ability to promote wound healing it has even found scope in preventing hair loss and facilitating hair growth in patients. When alpha granules of platelets are activated, they release various proteins, which also include platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF) and interleukin (IL)-1. According to a theory it’s believed that growth factors released by platelets have the ability to act on stem cells present with the bulging area of the hair follicles, leading to development of new hair follicles and promoting hair growth in turn.
Patients are advised to take a syringe of platelet rich plasma once in 3-6 months. These shots can only be injected by a physician since the procedure is technical and can only be achieved with the patient’s own blood.
It’s gaining significance for treating both male and female pattern baldness. Studies have revealed that when PRP was injected on scalp skin, hairs that had begun to thin out began to improve and gradually became thicker and longer. It’s the best procedure to treat hair loss for people who are experiencing thin hairs.
PRP injections don’t have any major side effects since the patient’s own blood is utilized.
