Avodart or Dutasteride is a drug produced by the pharmaceutical company called GlaxoSmithKline, and functions pretty much like Procepia to combat conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It’s basically known to treat prostatic hyperplasia. This medication is NOT approved for treatment of male pattern hair loss.
This medication can be called a modification of propecia to a certain extent since it limits both Type 1 and 2 (5-alpha reductase) enzymes that convert testosterone to DHT unlike Propecia which only restricts Type 2 form of enzyme. The Type 2 form of enzyme is present within the hair follicle whereas the type 1 form is found in the scalp and sebaceous glands. According to recent studies, it’s not clear as to how type 1 form of enzyme may promote hair growth though.
It’s an effective medicine that’s known to deal with genetic male pattern hair loss. Its proved quite effective on areas on top of the head and within the mid-scalp regions.
How effective is Dusteride?
It’s proven to be more effective than Propecia since Dutasteride(0.5 mg/day) hair count in an inch area of scalp were 96 hairs, in comparison to average of 72 hairs with 5 mg of Propecia per day.
Dutasteride has been proven to be 30% more effective than Propecia in facilitating hair regrowth.
It should be taken as prescribed by your physician. Since it’s available in the form of capsules it is advised to take this medicine once a day with a glass of water. It may be taken after having food or before that. Please be careful not to chew, crush or open an Avodart capsule since that will irritate your lips, mouth and throat and irritation may last upto 6 months in certain cases. Make it a point to swallow it intact and keep using the medicine as directed by the physician.
Despite the advantages that avodart has for facilitating hair growth and preventing hair loss it may also cause allergic reactions like hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Other side effects of taking this medicine are decrease in libido level (sex drive), lower amount of semen ejaculation during sex, erectile dysfunction and breast tenderness or enlargement. There are also chances of developing prostate cancer due to its consumption for a longer duration.
Who Cannot take this medicine?
Avodart capsules are not to be taken by women or children. Since Dutasteride may enter the body through skin, women and children shouldn’t be allowed to touch these medicines. This medicine is designed specifically for men and can result in birth defects if a woman comes in contact with it during pregnancy.
