Spironolactone or Aldactone is a drug that’s primarily developed to deal with issues of hypertension and heart failure. It’s also used for reducing increased or unwanted androgen levels and activity in the body.
Though Aldactone isn’t officially proved to treat hair loss, yet doctors prescribe this medicine to women to prevent thinning of hairs. This medicine is known to increase the thickness of hair and is a great diuretic that preserves potassium content within the body unlike other diuretics. Potassium is a key element that’s known to facilitate hair growth.
How it works ?
Spironolactone is known to slow the production of androgens or male sex hormones. In females, the most prominent androgen is testosterone and when it comes in contact with Type II 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme found in hair follicles, it gets converted into DHT, which leads to hair loss. Aldactone also restricts DHT from binding onto androgenetic receptors that are present within hair follicles. Women who suffer from androgenetic alopecia condition usually possess such hair follicles on top of the head and therefore that’s the only vulnerable area to experience hair loss.
It definitely lowers the testosterone levels in turn lowering DHT levels. Therefore hair loss is minimized considerably. Since it doesn’t allow the DHT to bind with the hair follicles, it stops hair loss and facilitates the growth of existing hair.
Apart from its benefits spironolactone also has a few side effects such as increase in urine frequency. Other side effects may be ataxia, drowsiness, dry skin, or rashes. Its intake may also cause cramps in abdomen, bloody stools, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, indigestion, decreased appetite, unusual discharge from nipples, clouded or dark urine, increased blood pressure, hives, itching, dizziness and increased heartbeat. In males it may cause breast tenderness, gynecomastia, testicular atrophy, reversible infertility, and erectile dysfunction, and loss of libido. Side effects are different in females and the medicine may cause menstrual irregularities, breast tenderness and breast enlargement.
